With a wide variety of triumphs, and a few failures thrown in for good measure, 2019 has flown by and it’s been wonderful.
The year started with the completion of a couple of businesses; one of these was Sonachan in Paignton which changed hands, Julie & Tony went on to their new life of retirement and some lovely new owners have taken over the reins. This was followed by the completion of another bed & breakfast business in Torquay just before the summer season really got going
BusinessXchange took a stand at the Tourism Exhibition at the Riviera Centre in March of this year, which seems a lifetime ago now, and we enjoyed our first taste of showing off to the trade. It is quite amazing how meeting people face to face transfers your message across to others, with much more sincerity, often lacking through social media or advertising. As a small independent company our USP is that we offer a truly personal service, I take huge pride in how we can help people through what is often one of the most stressful times of their lives. When I meet business owners and chat about the selling process and how we can help, they often ask questions and gain a far better understanding of how we work.
As one of my clients noted in their testimonial; “Selling your home can be stressful. Selling your business can be complicated. You can imagine what it’s like when the two are one and the same. Thankfully, Businessxchange makes the selling of your business/home as easy as possible.. by Rick & Able Hustwit who sold the Harmony and now running the Tynedale Bed & Breakfast in Torquay.”.
Having lived through that experience myself I can empathise, sympathise and generally feel for these people who have often become friends through the selling process.
Anyway, moving through the year we had a beautiful summer, I am enjoying gardening – I’ve surprised myself! My little garden is starting to take shape, and it’s fabulous to see plants, that I have brought and planted myself, grow and mature. It’s definitely a work in progress – well, that’s my excuse anyway J
During the summer we saw another two completions of Bed & Breakfast businesses in Torbay, with the delightful Marmalade bed & breakfast in Torquay, taken over by the lovely Graham & Dirk, right in the middle of the summer season. They are now enjoying their new lifestyle in the bay, with their new little pooch, taking in the beautiful walks and visiting lots of fabulous spots one gets to know when you live in Torbay. See their website https://www.torquaybedandbreakfast.co.uk/
There was also the business transfer of Amber House, in Roundham, Paignton, which has the most amazing sea views across to Brixham, with the changing vista from their pretty gardens. Debbie & Vivienne will welcome guests new and old who love Amber house for its fabulous location. Their website is http://amberhousehotel.co.uk/
Our second Exhibition of the year was at the Imperial Hotel in November for The Bridge Group, a members group of hospitality providers in Torbay; it was simply wonderful to see so many friendly faces, having owned a Bed & Breakfast business myself I have formed friendships with some delightful people, business owners and good fun people.
During the year I was also privileged to be part of several business networking groups, just to name a few;
- Women In Torbay Group run by the Boyce Hatton solicitor Ladies
- Torbay Business Network which meets monthly at Pier Point – It’s a very friendly group of business people and a beautiful setting (Oh and a fab breakfast!)
- Torbay Business Forum who meet monthly at the Riviera Centre
And, Your Partnerships which has sprung up this year and changed the face of networking with many events at all sorts of times and in various venues, with breakfast meetings, brunch and lunch meetings as well as different evening meetings – One has to congratulate the success story that Lee Randall-Pybus has created, following the footsteps of Cornish partnerships
My own business partnerships are maturing well too, with my VA Ally Moates of Switchfox giving marvellous support and back up to BusinessXchange and Kirsty Piercy who covers the bookkeeping for the business. Both of these lovely ladies have seen successes within their own businesses and I would recommend either of them to those looking for administration support.
Looking forward to 2020 I am keen to become more streamlined as a business, to create more automated systems and to send out more messages via email – I have come to realise that I can’t speak to everyone. There simply isn’t the time. So in order to ensure people know how fabulous this part of the world is I plan to tell them through the written word more regularly – which gives me more time to talk to those who are serious about either buying a business or selling their business
We have built a fantastic database of many hundreds of people, mostly buyers who are looking for a business in the South West – we are extremely lucky in getting enquiries for businesses from all across the country and in fact the world. People who are looking to relocate and move to this stunning place to live, with the coastline and beaches, coves and cliffs, and so many places in striking distance; Exeter and East Devon, the South Hams and Dartmoor. All in an easy distance.
Well, to close I would simply say goodbye and the very best wishes for the festive season ahead
I do hope that 2020 brings all that you wish for
